Quick answer
  • A lounge is usually worth it when you will be at the airport for 2+ hours and would otherwise buy food and drinks.
  • Quick rule: if the lounge price is close to what you would spend in the terminal, the lounge is usually the better deal.
  • It is rarely worth it when boarding starts soon, the lounge is far from your gate or you will not eat or drink.
  • Long layovers, delays, early-morning flights, work trips and families get the most value.

What do you actually get in an airport lounge?

Facilities vary a lot, but across the 1,405 lounges in the Lounge.club network the most common inclusions are:

  • snacks and hot or cold drinks (in about 85% of lounges)
  • Wi-Fi (about 84%)
  • flight information screens (about 73%)
  • hot food (about 59%)
  • alcoholic drinks (about 48%)
  • charging points (about 44%)
  • showers (about 17%)

Beyond food and Wi-Fi, the main thing you buy is space: a seat, a table, fewer crowds and a calmer place to wait.

The simple break-even rule

Estimate what you would realistically spend in the terminal — coffee, a meal, water, a snack, maybe a drink. Then compare it with the lounge price.

If the lounge costs about the same as your expected terminal spend — or only a little more — the lounge usually wins, because you also get seating, Wi-Fi, charging and quiet at no extra cost.

We break down example airport spending for solo travellers, couples and families in How to Save Money at the Airport.

When a lounge is worth it

  • Long layovers — three hours at a gate feels very different from three hours with a shower and a proper meal.
  • Delays — a lounge turns an unexpected wait into usable time.
  • Early-morning or late-night flights — when terminal cafés are closed or packed.
  • Work trips — reliable Wi-Fi, power and a table.
  • Families — space for children, baby changing facilities and food in one place.
  • Before a long-haul flight — eating well and showering can make a big difference.

When a lounge is probably not worth it

  • You arrive close to boarding time.
  • The lounge is in another terminal or far from your gate.
  • You have already eaten and just want to board.
  • The airport is small and quiet anyway.
  • The lounge has a short maximum stay that does not cover your wait.

Is it worth it for you? By traveller type

How to get the most value from a visit

  • Arrive early enough to actually use the lounge.
  • Pick a lounge near your gate — check the location before you go.
  • Eat a proper meal there rather than buying food before.
  • Use the shower before a long flight if one is available.
  • Check what is included — some lounges charge extra for premium drinks or showers.
